About 'florida state university dance'|game preview: Florida State








               The               greatest               show               on               earth               didn't               stop               at               the               big               top.

John               Ringling,               circus               king,               and               wife               Mable,               went               on               to               a               second               act               as               they               designed               and               grew               their               20-acre               waterfront               property               in               Sarasota,               Florida.

Home               to               an               extraordinary               circus               museum,               grand               art               gallery,               manicured               gardens               and               their               splendid               mansion,               Ca'               D'Zan               (house               of               John),               the               Ringlings               purchased               the               land               in               1911.
               What               began               as               a               winter               retreat               soon               became               home               to               the               Ringlings.

They               built               their               Venetian               Gothic               mansion               in               1924.

Since               Mable               loved               the               Venetian               style               of               architecture,               they               decided               to               pattern               the               five-story,               36,000               square               foot               waterfront               mansion               after               the               Doge's               palace               in               Venice.
               Ringling               built               the               museum               of               art               to               house               his               sizable               collection               of               old               world               masterpieces,               including               Rubens,               van               Dyck,               Velasquez,               El               Greco,               and               Gainesborough.

He               attempted               to               emulate               Florence's               Uffizi               Gallery.

The               art               museum               opened               in               1931,               two               years               after               Mable's               death.

John               Ringling               died               five               years               later               in               1936.
               The               circus               museum,               which               opened               in               1948,               celebrates               the               American               circus               and               its               history.

Housed               in               several               buildings,               it               showcases               parade               wagons,               circus               props,               sequined               costumes,               the               world's               largest               miniature               circus,               circus               posters               and               movies,               and               the               Wisconsin               rail               car               that               was               home               to               John               and               Mable               when               they               traveled               around               the               country               with               the               show.
               Ringling,               along               with               five               of               his               six               brothers,               started               the               famous               circus               in               1894.

He               initially               performed               as               a               song               and               dance               man,               but               soon               moved               into               overseeing               the               circus               route.

He               convinced               his               brothers               to               convert               from               circus               wagons               to               railroad               cars               in               1890.

This               propelled               Ringling               Brothers               into               a               world-class               show,               and               with               their               100               rail               cars,               they               crisscrossed               the               country               each               season.

They               purchased               Barnum               and               Bailey               in               1907,               and               with               this               acquisition,               secured               the               top               spot               in               circus               history.
               Ringling               left               the               estate,               which               included               the               mansion,               the               grounds,               and               his               art               collection,               to               the               people               of               the               State               of               Florida.

For               years               after               he               died,               the               estate               was               mismanaged               and               nearly               ruined               by               lack               of               necessary               repairs,               according               to               Ringling               Museum               pamphlets.

In               2000,               the               governance               of               the               historic               estate               was               transferred               from               the               State               of               Florida               to               Florida               State               University               making               it               one               of               the               largest               museum               and               university               complexes               in               the               U.S.

Since               then,               $55               million               has               been               raised               to               restore               the               estate               back               to               how               it               was               while               John               and               Mable               Ringling               were               still               alive.

Four               additional               buildings               have               been               built               as               well.
               Located               at               the               end               of               University               Parkway               on               Sarasota               Bay,               the               estate               and               museum               is               open               daily.
