Many teachers have taken extra classes toward their masters degree or have completed a masters degree, but are not aware of the fact that many junior colleges, universities, and career colleges need qualified people to become adjunct professors. In most cases you do not need to have a doctoral degree. In the state of Florida to teach as an adjunct you must have at least 18 graduate credits in the field that you teach at the junior college. Requirements are different for each institution. An institution may look at your transcripts and then say you are qualified to teach certain courses and your transcripts when reviewed by another institution may be looked at differently and you may be able to teach a whole different set of courses. In my case I have a doctoral degree in "Computer Technology" and I am able to teach "Introduction to Computers" and "Technology in the Classroom" in at least three local colleges and universities, but nothing else. Because I hold a masters degree in Educational Administration and Supervision and a full elementary bachelors degree in education at another institution I am allowed to teach many different education courses: "Science in the Elementary Classroom"; "Technology in Education"; "Art for the Elementary Teacher"; "Music for the Elementary Teacher"/; "Health and Physical Education for the Elementary Teacher" and many other education courses. Occasionally, you can even be asked to teach a class that you may be approved to teach on an emergency basis. Suppose, they can not find a teacher to teach just a few students that must have a class to graduate. The institution is allowed to "waive" the normal requirements and let you teach a class, but you have to have met many of the normal requirements. This does not happen often, but it does happen. You will need to have a resume, copies of your transcripts, letters of reference and it would be great if you had an email address, a cell phone, and voice mail. You must call each institution or visit the website of each institution. Get the application forms for each, fill them out and send them the materials they want. You really should call each institution (Human Resources) and get the names of the people that you must talk to at each location. Simply sending in your forms is not enough. Keep a notebook of all calls, all the names, phone numbers, and extensions of everyone you talk to about positions, and also record the date of your calls. With large institutions that have many campus locations, each location may have a different person to contact. You must be "pleasantly persistent". You need to plan to call once every semester to everyone that could possibly have a position available. Those responsible for hiring it seems rarely look back at files that have been previously sent. They react most often to phone calls and only when they absolutely must find someone quick do they actually look at files. The first time I was hired, it took about one full year before I was offered a position. My first position was on a Friday night at a junior college. I was offered the position because nobody else wanted to work on a Friday night. Once I was working in the system, I was offered part-time positions at 5 other locations with the same junior college. As a part-time adjunct you are limited to the number of courses you may teach per year. Eventually I had worked at all the locations. Then I saw an a listing in the newspaper for a teaching position at a private college. I went for the interview and my resume now included working at the junior college. The dean said I was hired and asked if I had any questions. I asked him what was the deciding factor in hiring me and he said: "One factor is that you have experience teaching at the junior college level, but I admit that you were also the only one who applied!" Eventually I had worked at six different institutions and over 15 different locations. My point with this is only that they need qualified people. If you have all the credentials needed and you work at this, you cculd become an adjunct instructor.. If you do not have the credentials presently consider going back to school yourself and complete the graduate level courses to get yourself qualified. Colleges and Universities have different pay rates, but you could be paid from about $17.00 per hour to about $60.00 per hour. It is common to be paid about $30 to $50 per hour presently. Sometimes institutions will pay extra for travel expenses. There are other positions also available, such as tutoring and laboratory monitoring. These other positions will pay lower amounts, but do get you into the system. The great part of this for me has been that I have also learned a great deal while teaching for colleges and universities and by teaching for several different institutions I have been able to gain a wide range of experience. When you teach at the college or university level you also get a lot of respect for your knowledge and experience. It is rare to go from being an adjunct (part time) instructor to a full time instructor, but this also does happen. Remember that such positions are most often part time and have little or no benefits. If you are presently a teacher in an elementary or high school an adjunct position may be exactly what you want to do when you retire. |
