About 'florida state university swimming'|AQUATIC NOTEBOOK, Issue 102: University of Miami Dominates Indian River State College

Stylistics               is               the               study               of               the               placement               of               languages               in               context               with               all               forms               of               writing.

Stylistics               also               include               the               use               of               dialogue,               grammar,               and               the               distribution               of               sentence               structure               when               reviewing               an               author's               style               of               writing.

Ernest               Hemingway,               a               former               journalist               and               author,               developed               his               unique               style               of               writing               when               he               wrote               books               like               "In               Our               Time"               and               "The               Garden               of               Eden."               According               to               Michael               Cooper,               Ernest               Hemingway               used               his               past               experiences               of               the               World               War               I,               bullfighting,               hunting               trips,               and               the               people               he               met               during               his               life               journey               (1).

By               integrating               his               past               experiences               into               his               books,               Ernest               Hemingway               developed               his               own               style               of               writing               called               the               Hemingway               Code.

His               stories               are               devoid               of               direct               statements,               descriptions               of               emotion               and               have               simple               sentence               structure,               like               "In               Our               Time"               and               "The               Garden               of               Eden."               Most               readers               have               to               pay               close               attention               to               the               simple               sentence               structure               in               the               story,               because               the               context               of               the               story               could               have               a               double,               complex,               or               implicit               meaning.

From               reading               "The               Garden               of               Eden"               and               "In               Our               Time,"               I               realized               that               Ernest               Hemingway               wrote               with               common               themes.

According               with               Mr.

Bickley's               class               handout,               Ernest               Hemingway's               common               themes               are:               man-woman               complicating               relationships,               the               importance               of               rituals,               drinking,               unethical               behaviors,               and               sexuality.

In               "The               Garden               of               Eden,"               Catherine               sacrifices               her               marriage               for               her               desires               to               be               a               man.

"In               Our               Time,"               displays               moments               before,               during,               and               after               the               War.

Even               though               these               stories               have               different               plots,               they               do               have               similar               themes.

"The               Doctor               and               The               Doctor's               wife,"               and               "Mr.

and               Mrs.

Elliot"               short               stories               have               the               same               theme               as               in               "The               Garden               of               Eden."               Both               couples               in               each               stories               have               a               trouble               with               communicating               their               feelings               to               each               other.

So,               instead               of               sharing               their               feelings               they               find               other               distractions               or               outlets               to               avoid               the               real               problem.

In               "The               Doctor               and               The               Doctor's               wife"               story,               the               doctor               rushed               out               of               the               house               to               avoid               his               wife's               criticism               and               her               theory               on               the               days               events.

So,               instead               of               talking               with               his               wife               in               a               calm               fashion,               he               left               the               house               and               went               searching               for               something               my               constructive               to               do               with               nature               and               his               son.

In               the               Mr.

and               Mrs.

Elliot's               story,               the               couple               are               having               trouble               conceiving               a               child.

With               the               frustration               and               disappointment               for               not               being               able               to               conceive               a               child,               Mrs.

Elliot               look               for               pleasure               from               another               woman               to               distract               her               from               her               pain.

These               two               short               stories               themes               are               used               in               "The               Garden               of               Eden."               In               the               Garden               of               Eden,               David               Bourne               did               not               understand               Catherine's               desire               to               act               and               dress               more               like               a               man               than               a               woman.

With               this               lack               of               understanding,               Catherine               knew               she               would               need               to               distract               her               husband               from               dwelling               on               her               desires,               by               introducing               David               to               a               new               temptation.

Instead               of               being               with               another               woman               alone,               Catherine               decided               to               share               Marita               with               David,               to               keep               him               preoccupy               while               she's               out               exploring               the               town               and               he's               working               on               his               current               manuscript.

In               each               of               these               stories,               Ernest               Hemingway               display               the               women               as               the               stronger               sex               than               the               men,               but               each               have               different               outcomes.

Catherine               from               "The               Garden               of               Eden,"               is               the               only               women               from               the               other               short               stories               that               have               the               upper               hand               in               her               marriage               and               the               ability               to               obtain               her               desires.
I               also               notice               certain               rituals               being               performed               throughout               Ernest               Hemingway's               books.

Fishing,               drinking,               and               being               around               nature               and               water               are               the               common               rituals               in               "In               Our               Time."               You               can               see               this               is               true               the               following               short               stories:               "The               End               of               Something"               for               fishing               and               water,               "The               Three-Day               Blow"               for               excess               drinking,               and               "Big               Two-Hearted               River"               for               fishing               and               being               with               nature.

In               "The               Garden               of               Eden,"               readers               can               see               that               the               characters               uses               drinking,               swimming,               and               sexual               acts               as               an               important               ritual               for               Ernest               Hemingway               to               display               in               this               story.

Ernest               Hemingway               uses               these               type               of               rituals               to               give               his               reader's               some               insight               as               too               how               destructive               or               in               control               the               character               are               in               each               story.
I               am               very               thankful               and               glad               that               I               was               force               to               read               Ernest               Hemingway's               book               in               both               of               my               current               classes.

By               reading               Ernest               Hemingway's               book,               I               learned               that               novels,               poems               and               any               other               form               of               writing               do               not               need               to               be               complicated               and               sophisticated               in               keeping               the               reader's               attention.

In               fact,               Ernest               Hemingway's               rarely               uses               loaded               down               adverbs               and               adjectives               to               describe               a               scene               to               his               reader's.

He               simply               uses               short,               simple,               direct               sentences,               to               get               his               point               across.

Ernest               Hemingway's               style               of               writing               also               avoids               describing               his               character's               true               feelings               to               his               readers,               in               complicated               details.

He               just               describes               the               characters'               action,               in               such               a               way,               that               the               characters'               emotion               is               implied               or               reveal               within               each               sentence               structure.

Every               English               major,               should               read               and               study               Ernest               Hemingway's               style               of               writing,               so               they               can               integrate               his               style               into               their               writing.

I               think,               by               learning               Ernest               Hemingway's               style               will               bring               simple               sophistication               in               each               students               writing.
