Along with basic supplies, necessities, and specialty requested items, 50 snails were blasted into space as well on May 11 on a Russian-built and unmanned spacecraft. The space craft carried about 2.5 tons of supplies along with the snails. The snails are for a special study on the effects of zero gravity in relation to tissue regeneration. Apparently Progress 25, the space craft in question, was launched Friday night on top of a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome. It is expected to reach the International Space Station Tuesday filled with over 5,000 pounds of air, food, fuel, and other important supplies for the astronauts at the space station. Another interesting part of the cargo being sent to the International Space Station, besides the snails is a collection of DVD's requested by the astronauts and recommended by psychological experts, which is mostly comprised of comedies. The psychological support team also sent along a variety of books and magazines that the astronaut crew had also requested. The astronauts that make up the space station crew have already received training for docking and guiding in the cargo vessel upon its arrival on Tuesday. The vessel will be guided in by the astronauts using a telerobotic controlled system that will be manually operated by the crew should the automated guiding and docking system fail or have another problem. The crew aboard the International Space Station includes two Russian cosmonauts and one American astronaut. They have been aboard the space station since December of 2006. Let's take a look at some facts about these three. Russian Cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin Fyodor Yurchikhin was born in Batumi, which is an Autonomous Republic of Ajar in Georgia. He was born January 3, 1959. He has two daughters with his wife Larisa Anatolievna Yurshikina, who was born in Shyolkovo, Moscow region. After his high school graduation he entered into the Moscow Aviation Institute. He is a qualified mechanical engineer and specializes in airspace vehicles. He also earned a Ph. D. In economics from the Moscow Service state University. He has worked at the Russian Space Corporation since 1983. He also has other space experience besides his most recent location at the International Space Station, or ISS. Russian Cosmonaut Oleg Kotov Dr. Kotov was born on October 27, 1965 in Simferopol. He has two children with his wife, Svetlana and enjoys diving, photography, and computers. Upon his graduation from high school in 1982, Kotov entered the Kirov Military Medical Academy. Among many other achievements, Dr. Kotov has served as GCTC at JSC (Johnson Space Center). His many experiences led him to his current position at the International Space Station.
